The present invention relates to a process for the production of various chemical products by catalytic hydrogenation of a nitrile-containing starting material and to a process for separating a compound from an aqueous solution comprising a nitrile, which compound is formed during hydrogenation.
2. Description of Related Art
The catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles to amines has been known for a long time. Thus, DE 675 156 mentions as catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitriles an acid clay, a steam-activated bentonite or a calcined acid clay, which acid clay is prepared from a substance formed from aluminum or iron oxides and silicates. Although the results of the hydrogenation process, which are described in detail in Example 2 of this patent application, show that a good yield of amine is obtained by these catalysts, the activity of the catalysts is very low; this is particularly so for the catalyst prepared from the iron-containing clay, which catalyst is required for the production of alkylamines. The hydrogenation of nitriles in which iron is used as a catalyst, especially of cyanoacetic acid, has been the subject of intensive studies in recent times.
